Mashiko’s main industry, pottery, attracts over two million visitors every year.
There are as many as 250 potteries and about 50 ceramic shops.
We are very pleased to introduce the fantastic works of various potters, who try to exert their individuality and uniqueness through their works, in this site.

We, experienced volunteer tour guides of this town, are happy to take you around Mashiko town, which is full of tourists’ attraction. We will guide you while explaining about culture, history and people.

Our recommendation of the walking trails in Mashiko

We would like to take this opportunity as a once-in-a-lifetime encounter.
Enjoy walking in Mashiko with us!

Nature hike visiting many historic sites in Oba area
(Places to visit---Jizoin Temple, Tsuna Shrine, The Main Hall of Okura Shrine, Dogairi Shinsui Water Park and more)

Time required: 2 hours 30min.
We will not enter the community center. Please take your time to walk around in the park.

Mashiko Station of Moka Railway( 10 min. drive) → Oba Community Center & Park → Jizoin Temple → (400m Walking) → Okura Shrine → ( 350m Walking) → The Tombs of the Utsunomiya Family → Oba Community Center & Park

Oba Community Center & Park ( whole circumference: 2,400m or 2,600 yards) → Dogairi Shinsui Water park ( approx. 90 min.)

* Please be aware of bees or adders while walking in the mountains.

Nature hike visiting famous old Saimyoji Temple
( Saimyoji Temple → Kanto Communion Road → Forest in Mashiko)

Time required: 3 hours

Mashiko Station of Moka Railway( 10 min. drive) → Saimyoji Temple(We will not enter the Main Hall of the temple, We will walk through the grounds of the temple. Time required: 40 min.)→ Kanto Communion Road ( 40 min. walking) → Forest in Mashiko
(Break and facility tour & a stroll at Forest in Mashiko: for 60 min.)

In case you use a reserved bus and have a driver, you can get off at Saimyoji Temple and get on at Forest in Mashiko afterwards.
In case you come by car and need to go back to Saimyoji Temple where you park your car, it takes 60 min. to return there on foot.
(Saimyoji Temple → Kanto Communion Road (distance: approx. 2,000m))

* Please be aware of bees or wild boars while walking in the mountains.

Strolling around the town & visiting museums to know about Mashiko Pottery
(The Mashiko Reference Collection Museum/Mashiko Museum of Ceramic Art in Togei Messe/Jonaizaka Avenue)
If you would like to visit a pottery studio, please inform us in advance.

Time required: 3 hours

The Mashiko Reference Collection Museum →Mashiko Museum of Ceramic Art in Togei Messe Mashiko( 800m) → Jonaizaka Avenue (strolling around and shopping)

The Mashiko Reference Collection Museum(approx. 40 min.) → Mashiko Museum of Ceramic Art in Togei Messe Mashiko(approx. 60 min.)

At Jonaizaka, you can also visit Higeta Indigo Dyeing Studio by request.
Total amount of admission fees of the two museums: 1,400 yen per head, 1,250 yen per head for groups

* Both museums open at 9:30 in the morning and close on Mondays.

How to ask the volunteer guide?

●We welcome groups from 10 to 40 people. We are sorry that we are unable to attend for smaller groups.
●The guiding is free of charge.
Please pay your admission fee and the travel expense when necessary.
●Service hours: 9:00 am~16:00 pm
●Service is available for a half day on Saturday, Sunday and holidays.
Weekdays are negotiable.
●We recommend the above-mentioned routes. We can arrange other routes by request.
●Please fill in the application and send it by post or fax to Mashiko Tourist Association at least one month prior to the day of service.
After we make necessary arrangements, we will inform you of the details by phone or fax.
●No tour is available during Pottery Fairs in spring and fall.
●If we are unable to arrange the tour due to some circumstances, we will reply to you so.
●We will inform you of the person in charge later. Please discuss the details with your guide(s) directly.
●If your guide has a job during the day, we would like to ask you to contact him/her at night.
●For the whole day tour, please provide the guides with lunch.

Please note the followings

●No service during New Year holidays ( from the end of December to the beginning of January )
●Should the schedule change, please notify the Mashiko Tourist Association.
●For any change on the day of service, please notify us immediately.
●Please note that we are unable to accompany a group of people getting drunk.
●Please be sure to write down the telephone number where the person in charge of your group can be reached on the day.
●To and from tour starting and finishing points are either the sightseeing spot or the parking lot of Mashiko station.
